Activating Devices

Why activate my device?

It is very important that you activate all devices when you add them to your network to prevent protection from lapsing. New devices will receive core, free protection for a limited period after the software is installed so that you have time to set up your network and choose the products you need.

Viewing and activating the device from the portal

Each device will be added to your management portal the next time it is connected to the internet after you install the Avast software. From the device details and on the dashboard, you are prompted to activate newly added device(s). Activate a single device by selecting the activate link next to the device when it is listed. Activate multiple devices by selecting the link at the bottom of the device list screen.

Activate device notifications

It is best to activate your devices straight away so that your whole network has the protection it needs. A follow up notification is sent to you after 21 days if the devices are not activated.  Coverage will lapse after 30 days and you will receive a notification that your device is unprotected. Learn more about notifications.

Products to protect your device

When you activate your device you will be prompted to choose a protection product; free, basic protection or premium protection. Learn more about subscriptions.

    seems that editing the file bcc.cfg in C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\conf

    editing or adding the lines

    use_proxy = 1
    proxy_port=yourproxyport
    proxy_ip=yourproxyip
    proxy_auth=0

    and same for bcc.cfg C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\var (maybe here you'll have to create the bcc.cfg)

    will solve.
    Just tried on 1 PC and it worked.

    You'll have to temporarely disable the Avast self defense to edit those files.

    Hello,

    We have recently added the ability to configure your proxy settings directly into the installer. From within your portal, after you have selected "Download the Installer to this device", select the option to "Download the full installer here". The Windows EXE file will then allow you to enter the correct proxy settings for your network.

    Best regards,

    Hello,

    i've already used that installer downloaded with my proxy settings: it doesn't help with the activation/communication problem as it effects only the definitions updates. The only way is to manually edit both bcc.cfg

    Regards,
    Roberto

    Hello,

    When the proxy settings are set in the full installer, it will write them to C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\conf\bcc.cfg. After the initial communication it will download the bcc.cfg that belongs in C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\var, which utilizes the proxy settings set in your templates. Was your downloaded package, which included proxy settings, run on a PC that previously had Avast?

    If i remember correctly i tested three different scenarios:

    • PC already running Avast: the new setup (the one with proxy settings) won't affect bcc.cfg

    • PC previously installed with Avast but fully removed: i'm not sure but i rember just one of the two bcc.cfg was affected with proxy settings.

    • PC without Avast: (justtested on win 8.1 pc) the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\conf\bcc.cfg is affected by proxy settings. The one in C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\var is not affected (but online the pc is ready for activation son the communication is ok).

    Best regard,
    Roberto
